I'm applying to Rice University and on the application, they ask me to list other colleges I'm applying to, but it's not a required field. Is it better to list them or to not list them?

If you list any, make sure they are schools Rice would respect. If it looks like Rice is a stretch for you, they may not feel bad about rejecting you.

If you're a strong applicant, and if they see that you are applying to competing schools on the same or higher level, they may work a little harder to entice you to go there. Could even mean a bigger scholarship. But as some others said, if Rice is the most selective on your list, it's not going to make a difference.

On the other hand, if they ask which is your top choice, I'd put undecided. Best for them to think that they're one of your top choices but that you could be convinced to go somewhere else.

perhaps they want to know if the other schools you are thinking about are at a similar academic level as Rice. Depending on the schools you list they might be able to determine if Rice is your first choice school or a back-up or in equal running with other considered schools. they might also want to know if you've put all your eggs in one basket by applying only to Rice and counting on being accepted.

When I went on a college visit I asked if that was a trick question. The admissions counselor told me that it was just to make sure I was actually dedicated to my major choice (pharmacy). For example, why would they take an applicant who only has applied to one school for pharmacy because obviously he/she is not that interested in it enough.
And it is also out of their curiousity to see who they're rivals are when it comes to applying.

Just list a couple of your other choices.

For example, if you really applied to 10 other schools, don't list all of them, just throw down UT and TCU

I don't think it really matters. I didn't list any, because I only applied to one, and I still got in.
