I know it sounds weird but writers can have their entire careers destroyed for not knowing about some things before they begin writing.

I don't think you'll be able to "avoid" it--seeing how one agent I got a rejection from wanted all his sci-fi acquisitions based on this one book he represented.

The only thing writers can have their entire careers destroyed is IF they choose to take the easy way and copy & paste WHOLE passages from other books as "filler"--without doing the actual work themselves. (Or very little.)

Originality *does* count. If you're having trouble trying to stay original, then clearly you're holding onto something and should just let it GO.

It's the only way you can succeed and survive as a writer.

I never had issues with plagiarizing when I got started 10 years ago for real. I spent my teenage years doing it off and on, but back then, I didn't really care. It wasn't the *point*.

The point then, was that I wanted to write out what I thought was cool.

Today, I write to establish myself as a serious writer. So while I may read what the mainstream has for books, it doesn't mean I have to write like them. :0)

A bird you've never seen before might crap on your head but it won't be because you saw that in a dream before. I f you have the ability to visualize ( word for word) text you've never seen you don't need to write a book. You need to hook up with David Blaine. He'd pay you multi-millions for the secret.

I think being Original is difficult, but not impossible. stay away from Cliches and there is very little chance of your being charged with plagiarism...

Best of Luck!!
Thats why it is said to write from the Heart!! I suppose.
