Vitamin D is the only vitamin absorbed (from sunlight) directly through the skin. itamin D supplements are normally sufficient through exposure to sunlight or in milk (Vitamin D added).
Supplements are also useful for situations where there is little or no exposure to unsheilded sunlight (working nights, in a mine or cave, in a submarine, etc) or during the winter when outside activity is usually curtailled.
Vitamin D should have no effect on body growth or stuff like that. It is merely a nutrient necessary for the healthy functioning of the human body, and as a catalyst for the absorbtion of calcium (which is why its in milk)

Vitamin D is very important for preserving good and strong bones.. Calcium with Vitamin D is a good source and so is the sun, even if it's not good for your skin. Your teeth are also recipients of this important vitamin. It is found in dairy products too and milk is a good source. If your bones are weak and frail, they can't break or not grow like they are supposed to due to the loss of calcium. I know so many children today who don't drink milk like I had to and their teeth are decayed and they fracture bones easily. Yes...milk does a body good! Got milk?

Vitamin D plays an important role in the maintenance of organ systems.

*Vitamin D regulates the calcium and phosphorus levels in the blood by promoting their absorption from food in the intestines, and by promoting re-absorption of calcium in the kidneys.
*It promotes bone formation and mineralization and is essential in the development of an intact and strong skeleton. Although, at very high levels it will promote the resorption of bone.
*It inhibits parathyroid hormone secretion from the parathyroid gland.
*Vitamin D affects the immune system by promoting immunosuppression, phagocytosis, and anti-tumor activity.
