My dog digs holes on occasion when he's left in the yard. It happens when there's mud or he thinks he sees something moving in the dirt or grass.

Now we have several pretty deep holes and lots of smaller ones in the yard, and I'm afraid if I fill them with dirt he'll just be enticed to dig there again. I'm trying to train him to stop this but that's a separate issue.

So does anyone know an effective way to fill in these holes so that no one will break an ankle in my yard? Thanks!

Buy a shovel, if you don't already have one. Use it to fill in the holes. Repeat as necessary.

The suggestion to use pepper is useful but the effect is temporary. You have to be there to apply the pepper on the area where your dog wants to dig or alternatively spread pepper all over your yard.

My solution to that problem, which was also my problem when my dog was a puppy, was to fix the dog's habit. It took me three days monitoring the dog's activity, every time he is in the yard, to stop it. Still from that day on and eight years later as of this year, when summer heat is at its worst, my dog still dig a hole in the yard and lie in it to cool down and sleep. And I have learned to live with it. Our compromise, between me and my dog, is for me to cultivate and loosen a patch of ground in a cool spot under an apple tree and he cooperates by digging on that spot. I rake back the soil when he is done using the hole.

Perhaps, you could also offer your dog a certain spot in your yard, away from the yard-users' traffic where your dog is allowed to dig. And don't forget that at time there are times that there are really some animals running around in the yard which may be true to yours too and your dog is alerting you to it.

And another thing, if the dog has someting bothering it, like fleas for instance the dog will all dig the ground to loosen the soil for a dust bath.

But to fix the holes that your dog has dug and stop your dog from digging it again, I think it has no solution except if you fill the hole with concrete.

As you fill in the holes, sprinkle red pepper in layers. A couple times of sneezing and the burn of the pepper will discourage digging. It may take a few times, the dog will get the idea.

Another method, fill the hole with water and dunk the puppy's face into it. This is very effective with dogs who think water is strictly for drinking and hate baths.

Black pepper no longer plenty ,purely sprinkle some in each and each hollow and get better, then possibly a sprint extra on precise of 'one' hollow. Then take your dogs to this hollow & provide a stern command "N O" tell the puppy "it rather is undesirable" tell it - I "Don,t like this crap, cease It" Take him to each and each hollow positioned his nostril to the floor and repeat your assertion or command ,what ever you prefer to call it..Be corporation the Pepper won't harm it yet will remind him whilst he's presented sniffing around.. Be corporation ,Be consistent, Be loving.. I presume it rather isn't a 'looking breed' or a 'working breed' some cases a dogs organic instink kicks in . you need to take that into attention.along with your puppy. [?] And yet another danger...[?] in case you artwork or attend college possibly he's needing or needing extra one on one time.even although He has a fenced backyard to maintain him risk-free possibly He desires to decide for a stroll/run with you or yet another kinfolk member.[?].possibly He gets excited.once you bypass away or come domicile and" it fairly is whilst He is going out and digs.".[?] purely pay interest to whilst He has a tendency to dig !The pepper will wash away after a while.. And to every physique else analyzing this.. dogs have very mushy noses ! a sprint pepper or vinegar on the floor no longer Up the nostril won't harm them yet remember the style you could sense in case you have been the single smelling it.. It,s purely used as a reminder till the puppy knows what's exspected.
