The only reason i would buy a new gateway is the "Gateway one" all in one. It just looks so sleek and stylish. All i've owned since the gateway has been dell. Kind of hesitant of going back....

If I was going to buy one off the shelf again and not build it myself, Yes, I would buy a Gateway / eMachines. I still have an old Gateway Desktop with a P3 processor, it still runs great. My kids use it now.
Dells are o.k., just stay away from HP, they are junk.

take it from someone who doesn't spell gAtEwAy like this... As a computer builder and a hardware expert I suggest you DON'T get any oem type computer (dell,hp,emachines, ect) and instead try to build one yourself or perhaps get your local computer builder to assemble one from the parts you order online (much less expensive than paying retail on every part from OEM's)
for the same thing you would spend getting a gateway or a dell you could get twice the system for less money when you get a computer from a major manufacture you are paying for a name,a bogus warranty, and a fancy case ( of the gateway you were speaking of purchasing) and if you like the sleek design of the gateway case check out newegg.com or tigerdirect.com for cases there and im sure you will find something you like better.

Go to a local place that sells and builds there own computers, and has been in business for at least 3 years (that way you know they will be around to fix anything you may have a problem with) And tell them you are planning on getting a custom system built and you are going to buy the parts online and have him assemble it (he will charge a small fee to assemble) Then ask him what he (or she) reccomends for your price range as far as parts and hardware goes, as to get a "grocery list" of parts that will go good together, remember you can't go gung-ho and buy a motherboard and a processor just because the numbers look good you have to make sure they are compatible with each other (for example you can't put an Intel processor in an AM2 slot motherboard) so thats why you have your local computer guy recommend the right parts for your budget... A nicely preforming computer that can play all of todays latest games (and anything else you want it to do)can be built for no more than $400 not including monitor (I assume you already have one)

Keep in mind if you do decide to build it yourself MAKE SURE ALL YOUR PARTS ARE COMPATIBLE. I can can't stress that enough for new builders because I made the same mistake myself the first time I built one... AMD processors go with am2 motherboards... intel quad cores only go with intel core duo motherboards... only certain ram will fit with certain motherboards the best thing to do is check the specs of the motherboard and then go from there as it will list what type of ram and processors are compatible with that type of motherboard. Good Luck! Hope this helps if you want to know anything else add details on your question or post another one.

I have a notebook from Gateway and haven't had any problems. They have gotten waaaayyyyy better. The times I've had to call it is always with an rep that is understandable... unlike Dell who forward all their customer service calls to India, Baghdad, and other countries you can hardly understand. This to me is huge!! The last thing I want when I'm already frustrated is a person I can't understand =) Also, each time I've called it has been for wireless assistance, the reps are knowledgeable and efficient.

Good luck with your decision and purchase!
