Well ever since Stargate I'd have to say the beautiful Amanda Tapping(Sam). So I would have to say girl.

Both because if the regular girls name is Samantha then her nickname is Sam, then it's a girly name. But I also know a ton of guys named Sam, it really just depends on how the persons personality is, but Sam is both a boy or girl name.

Well I have two friends named Sam that are girls so I tend to think of a girl when I hear Sam. It does get confusing though!
