About all we had to choose from was corn flakes, Quaker oats, shredded wheat and cream of wheat. There were probably a few more but I don't remember them. If it wasn't at the A&P or the corner grocery stores, forget it. Were rice crispies around back in the 30's? There was some kind of rice, I just don't remember. I do remember learning to hate corn flakes when all we had to put on it was water.

Corn Flakes
Wheaties, The Breakfast of Champions. The problem with this cereal was that it got really soggy.
Cream of Wheat

My mom didn't buy cold cereal when I was small. She wanted
me to have a rib sticking bowl of either Cream of Wheat and
some cinnamon toast, or a bowl of Oatmeal with butter and
sugar and milk. Or her specialty. A bowl of crunched up
shredded wheat, a good dollop of peanut butter and sugar,
and warm milk poured over it all. And then she'd blend the
peanut butter in with the shredded wheat and warm milk,
and it would be a peanuty mush. Guaranteed to stick to my
ribs on many a cold morning. And it would last me til noon
either in school or at home playing in or out of the house.
Some may think that is simply gross, but if you like peanut
butter, give it a try. I still like it on rare occasions today. And
I guarantee, it will last you til lunch time LOL.

Same as now, Cheerios! I also loved my Grandfather's cracked wheat cereal.

I know he had a grinder he used to crack the wheat himself and he cooked it in a double boiler the night before and left it on the stove until morning (heat off, of course) when he'd heat it up. I asked him for the recipe once. All he'd tell me was, "Aw kid, you just put it in the pan with some water and cook it!" The secret went to the grave with him. I'm still trying to figure it out. It was really good!

I was never a breakfast eater. My mom practically had to force me to eat before school. I did like Cream of Wheat and Oatmeal. I never cared for cold cereal. Now I like Wheaties.
