My tennent has left (lease ended and they moved on) and my building is now vacant. I am pretty sure that I will have a new commercial tennent in a few months. I'm in talks with a few people and one is very likely to take it. But even if I end up waiting a long time I am unconcerned.

For the safety and security of the premises what should I do?

Is it wise to cover the windows up so passers by can't see everything inside?

Its in a well lit, downtown area. But I have seen people cover windows up before so I am curious to know if this is a good idea and an important thing to do.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

I've seen windows 'soaped up" - covered with a filmy coating of soap that obscures the view and doesn't look so derelict. Also, newspapers, being flammable, might be considered a fire hazard, and in violation of your insurance policy. Of course, either method could lead the unscrupulous to wonder what you were trying to hide ... You might consider storing valuable equipment/inventory until such time as the store is rented, and it could not hurt to inform the police that the store is untenanted, and ask them to keep a eye out on the premises.

It sure would not hurt. Newspaper looks a little tacky though. I would put the largest for Lease sign up in the window that would cover most of the window. Have it made of a vinyl this way it will last you some time and it will cover the windows and advertise at the same time. It is also a tax write off.

Dear Sir Reginald,I don't know what country you are in?, but any place that is vacant could be a place of interest to squatters, vandalism, and a fire hazard.Check your insurance documents to see what's what! You may be in some violation by leaving it vacant.Newspapers are unsightly and a sign of vacancy.Anything on the inside should be placed in proper storage .Look around the area and see how the best places do what we call mothballing.Put your building to bed professionally.
