I just recieved a letter stating that i owed my former employer over 300 dollars in pay they say that i owe them, but i left on my two week notice back on november 16th and and recieve all my pay correcltly. I do believe that this falst but they say i owe them by january 11,2008 never the less. is this sort of thing legal?

you need to send a formal request VIA certified mail to the payroll dept asking for all pay check/hours. they must provide with any info regarding their request for an overpayment in salaries or hourly pay, how they came to this decision. they cannot just say you owe them without sending you proof as to when they over paid you and how it happened. Keep a copy of your request for your own records. i would hope you keep for at least three years all paycheck stubs with hours info and or salary info since you may need this if there is a small cliams court case. But by law they have to send you written proof of where and how this overpayment occured.

Of course it's legal.

If they think they overpaid you, they have the right to ask you for the money back. If you think they're wrong, you have the right to tell them no.

If they still feel you owe it, then they can sue you, and you'll both get to present your evidence.

What do they think is the reason that you owe them?
