First, thanks to all of those who responded to my question that posted initially about my stolen laptop from the school library. However, I would like to make somethings clear. First my laptop was not stolen by a student or a stuff or teacher. It was stolen by someone from the street who was not even suppose to be in the school to begin with. Second the emergency door was suppose to have an alarm but this door doesn't have it and the camera next the door doesn't work. yes I should have taken my laptop with me but the school also should have made sure that the people who should not be in school stay out off the school. what you guys think know???

Ummm, did ya get the laptop back? Sounded like you did. Take responsibility for your actions. It is not the schools fault that you left your property sitting there unattended. I bet you would complain if tuition went up to repair the alarm and camera, right? What do you think would happen to tuition if you sued. What are you trying to accomplish? You obviously felt safe enough to leave your property attended, so that can't be it.

I highly doubt you can sue, and if you did, you would probably lose. First, I don't know one school library who does not have a sign that states that they are not responsible if your stuff gets lost or stolen if left unattended. Second, how do you know if they came through the emergency door? What if they came in from the front door like most students? Also, if your school is a public school, there really is no stopping anyone from coming in and just sitting and studying (unless you need to have an access card to come in, some schools do this). Sorry to hear about your laptop.

It seems that the school is partially liable. Their insurance may cover such losses due to their negligence. At the very least, I would press the issue to get the alarms and cameras functioning properly for the safety and security of the students.

Its not worth it.

The cost of a lawyer and the whole trial process against a school district force is just time consuming and stressful.

Unless the laptop was over 3000 bucks or somehting,

naw.
Sh1t happens sadly.
And Schools can be dumb as apesh1t.

None of those things make any difference. Since it's your laptop, the entire responsibility to keep it safe lies with you. The school has no responsibility to do anything. They can have a security system and visitor screening if they want, but there's no law that says they have to.

I'd say since you're in school you're under 18, and no lawyer will take you seriously. Further, to sue you must be an adult, since you're not, you'll need your parents. Good luck with that. Learn your lesson and don't leave valuable electronics unsupervised.

Why didn't you take your laptop with you??? If you sue, that's the first question their attorney will ask you.All they have to do is prove contributoiry negligence ( which you admit to) and your case will end up in the trash.

Please sue them. If I had the money, I would find a good lawyer and sue the school on the basis that I haven't recieved a quality education. Some may say that I wouldn't win, but I am sure I would set a precedent.

I would say yes, but get a lawyer that has a good reputation and that you trust (is this a college, if so which one).
