I am 15 years of age, and as a violin player who has played somewhat consistently, (though admittedly not rather diligently as of the last few years) for around eight years, I can personally assure you that cognitive development that deals with auditory recognition as well as memorization is closely correlated with instruments. In regards to whether or not instruments increase the IQ of any individual is subject to debate, as IQ scores generally change over time as we get older, and IQ scores have variation even when taken by the same person several times. I can say, however, from personal experience that playing the Violin has been very beneficial, and I personally believe that my IQ has raised several points, although the only true empirical evidence of which was on a recent test that I took online. On this test I scored a 146, however as any of you know that do any independent research on the Online IQ tests, the credibility of this score is really unsupported. I can, however give you my score from second grade, in which I was state (or county I'm not 100% sure) administered an IQ test on which I scored a 140. Whether my IQ has actually raised 6 points since then is very debatable, but I feel there is a very good chance that it has.

No, but playing the viola sure does because it appears there's another viola player here too!

Haha, but I have to say, the violin players in my orchestra aren't that bright and don't seem to shut up when they should, so no. I don't think the violin does much of anything to make you smarter.

Generally speaking, being involved in music (being able to read music in both bass and treble clefs) does higher your I.Q. I play the violin, so maybe.

Your IQ is a set number from birth to death.

You may make it go up or down a bit, depending on how much brain damage you get (I.E. car wreck)

Of course it does. Most violinists I know are rather intelligent.
