good answer, but it's a lot more complicated than that. First off, nobody, and i do mean nobody could match Japan on the high seas, not even us Americans prior to the attack on Pearl Harbor. When you think of the Pacific War it's better to think of it on a naval mindset, Japan had a powerful navy that it was building up since the turn of the century. If you control the seas in the Pacific, then you pretty much can crush any one of those islands. However, in regard to China, earlier in the century up until war with Japan China had been suffering and was even regarded as the "sick man of the world". Japan is ridiculously smaller than Japan which in my opinion gave them greater mobility against China, which was just a bloated giant. China was in the middle of a civil war when the Japanese invaded. China was fragmented and Japan went in for the kill. Any British strongholds where you had Anglo soldiers such as in Australia and some of the British holdings in southeast Asia were easily routed by the Japanese..... Japanese had the air superiority, and in my opinion the Japanese were just good... they did not surrender and they were ferocious. I don't think the British were used to Asians being so modern. The Japanese were unrelenting against the British. As far as Korea, I believe Korea was already a territory of Japan since earlier in the century. One more thing of importance the Japanese Empire was a INDEED A TRUE EMPIRE. Unlike Hitler, Japan acquired their territories slowly. Not a blitzkrieg like campaign where an entire continent was taken in like a year. The Japanese were patient and meticulous learning from their errors all while picking on very weak adversaries.

prior to WWI Japan had industrialized and militarized itself for their dream of supremacy of the Asiatic theater. after WWII started, Hirohito Tojo and Adolph Hitler met with Mussolini of Italy and agreed on the divisions of the areas that they would conquer and possess after the great Axis victory. Japan used secrecy, intimidation and great fear to advance as fast and as far as they did. to answer your question in simpler terms, they had a plan, knew how they wanted to execute in and did it with such ferociousness and strength, that they overwhelmed their adversaries. as far as the military might, the emperor of Japan put every one over the age of 15 in the factories making war equipment. i hope this answers your question.

The Japanese Empire had the military might to invade much, but not all, of Asia. But Japan only had the resources and military might to hold it for less than four years.
Why? Poor planning and the underestimation of their foes.
