there was an old belief that when you sneezed your soul could escape your body. if you said 'bless you' it supposedly kept your soul from leaving.

I heard that a long time ago people thought that when other sneezed they were possessed by evil spirits or something. that's why they would say "bless you". I guess it just turned into a habit after a while and people continue saying it even till this day. i might be wrong though. ;p

I heard this like in 6th grade or something but suposably when you sneeze all the evil leaves your body so you say bless you or something a long the lines of that. Really dumb.

I heard an old tale,

taking over your body when

yoour heart stops when you sneeze,
and when someone says "Bless you"
it discourages the devil..
I just heard that story,
but it doesn't mean I believe it...

Because it was once believed that the soul left the body when one sneezed, and the Devil would rush in to take its place. Saying "Bless you" stopped the Devil in his tracks.

during the black plague in Europe. when one sneezed, it was believed that a part of your soul was lost. and that evil spirits will try to take that part of your body. to prevent that one will bless you. to stop the evil spirits from taking over

in the old days...people got sooo sick so they always said bless you when you sneezed....everyone just always said it and didnt even know why! So thats your answer!!

i've heard a lot of different reasons, but the reason i thought was true was because your heart skips a beat when you sneeze. =)
