If you are not paying for the music, then it is against the law.

Some artists will put their music on the internet for free download, but your trick is to find out who does. But it is a general rule that if you are supposed to pay for it, then you should. Otherwise why should anyone really make any music if they aren't going to get paid for it????

Why is it free?

Is it free because the artist has decided to post it for free? That's legal to download.

Is it "free" because you've found a site, or a PtP network like limewire that is posting it without the artists permission? That's a crime to download.

If you are downloading it free off the internet, it is illegal. But there's an extremely minimal chance you will get arrested because it's difficult to track you.
