I brought my son to hospital for treating a broken foot tonight, and my wife was with me as well. We were driving on RT.1 through westerly, RI and wife pointed out, up in the sky, " what the hell is that " I glanced up through windshield, spotted three bright white light's from what i could see, and a large wide shaped ray of light in the front, " I think " and Looked back up about 5 seconds later, POOF, it was gone just like that...the whole sky was black, this happened about 10pm, could it have been a UFO, I don't think a plane would fly through when were in a severe weather alert right now!!! with snow, rain, etc.

Hi Todd -

Pilots in bad weather will fly a precise glide path during approach whether they can see the ground or not. When they do this, their landing lights generally form a triangle on the lower surfaces of the aircraft and the reflection from the snow / rain forms a "fan" out ahead of them - because that is the direction in which the lights are pointing - i.e. forward. When seen from the ground, they appear to be moving faster than normal because they are flying low, and they may be appearing and disappearing as they pass in and out of low clouds. Could this have been what you saw? Were you anywhere near an active runway?

Hope your son is OK.

By your description most likely an airplane, large airliner.

"three bright white light's from what i could see, and a large wide shaped ray of light in the front,"

That is the standard landing light configuration. You will see that as long as you are in line with the lights, the moment the plane veers away "poof" is gone!

Sorry mate! No, UFO.

I am sure that UFO is exists but according to your situation that night, I think you might not saw it. Because the white snow flowing will cause a very incredible imagination, hmm...or not but a cause a real scene but only can see in your position that time. Just like when you sit between two trees, you can't see the behind of the trees but someone behind the trees also can't see you. Is there any spot light that you never tough? If not, Is that scene was seen by anyone near you?

coulda been landing lights on a plane flying below the clouds or through a break in the clouds?

the U means you don't know and ignorance is the natural state of humanity.

really, if we knew everything, it would be a boring world, dontchathink?

Now, that said... if you make the unconscionable leap to "We saw a Flying Saucer! Take me to your Leader!" then please stop at the booth near the door on your way out to purchase your Tinfoil Hat.

Tinfoil Hats are Faraday Cages, you know... them's REAL science!

You saw a plane with it's landing lights on. In heavy or foggy weather, they'll cast a long beam in front of the aircraft. It went into a bank of cloud or out of your line of sight.

First response: Yes. Second response: could it have been a helicopter? Maybe police helicopter or medical helicopter?

If you can't identify it, then it's a UFO. At least until you figure out what it was.
