It is actually up to you to decide - If you choose NY you are looking at the seat of the government after the Revolutionary war before it was moved to DC. If you look at Massachusetts then you have Plymouth rock and it's history. Or, you can choose Virginia and being one of the first colony. So take your choice.

The most seditious colonies were Massachusetts, New York, Pennsylvania and Virginia. Most of the Founding Fathers lived and worked in these four colonies, which provides you with a political angle as well as an economic angle, since all were either well-to-do farmers or entrepreneurs.
Of course the first shots of the American Revolution were fired at Lexington Green, so if you wished to report on Massachusetts the early military skirmishes with the British would figure prominently in your essay.

Virginia because they had plenty of individuals who were involved in colonial America and it was at Jamestown , Virginia where the colonies were starting to form. There was Washington, Patrick Henry Thomas Jefferson and institutions like the House of Burgesses formed in 1619 etc
