I cant seem to get it to work, when I go to network settings it says I have a connection but then i try to play online and it says "It cannot establish a connection". I have the Adelphia High speed modem.

Are you hardwired through an ethernet or going wirelessly?
It could be a number of things:
1) check the settings on the router, you may have to enable MAC address permissions
2) You may have to turn off UPnP when establishing a connection on the ps3
3) All ps3's.... EXCEPT the 20 gig version (which is discontinued), one of the first SKUs

Reset router.
Edit: Unplug router for 15 seconds and then plug it back it. Make sure PS3 is off though.
No it will not mess up your connection.

if you have a wireless router, and modem, see if it is compatible with the ps3. for my xbox 360 i have a wireless router, a basic linksys and another router that connects directly to the system. check if it is compatible with the ps3
