I'm planning a trip to Kyoto. Is there a protocol that I should observe?

if you are going to someones house it is customary to bring a gift. (a tin of cookies will suffice)
shoes do really come off before entering someones home.
when meeting an elder or someone whose status is above yours, bow slightly lower than they bow to you.
