*No suitable partner is in your life at the present moment
*Your life partner is off on a business trip for the next six weeks
*Devotion to a do-good cause such as missionaries, nuns or priests undertake
*You or your mate just had a baby or are very near the due date
*Physical injuries or life altering illnesses in you or your life partner
*No time to develop a good relationship and you are not into causal sex
*Extreme depression in you or your partner
*Long term hospitalization of you or your partner
*Making a choice that causal sex is not really filling a void in one's live like you may have thought it would
*Married couples without major, unresolved issues such as an affair on either part
*Religious conviction to be pure for marriage
EDIT to dfdfdfdf: Learning how to control and channel your sex drive is part of growing up. It's what separates us from animals. You'd have to live a pretty charmed life to get through it without at least a few dry months/years where celibacy makes the most sensible choice. If you were in a car accident and lost your arm, for example, do you really think your sex drive would be exactly the same while you're in the recovery precess as it is right now?

Hm, some people become celibate because they aren't even planning on having a future partner..
EDIT-personally, I am celibate right now for two reasons.. I'm not interested in sex, and I'm not interested in relationships.
Sex just doesn't appeal to me. I have absolutely no sex drive..
And I don't want to deal with relationships.
Which kinda resulted in me becoming celibate.
And no, it doesn't have anything to do with pleasing a "future partner".

Some become truly celibate for religious reasons, or, in the case of one of my friends, because the idea of sex just sickens them. Some do it so they can focus on other things.

I am celibate for several reasons:
-I want to remain STD free
-I don't want my college life cluttered up with men
-I don't want to become pregnant or have to worry about the possibility
-I'm enjoying discovering the world on my own in freedom
-If I do find a man to marry someday, I want him to find comfort in the fact that I have no "baggage" from old relationships from above reasons.

i am separated and been celibate for over a year.
in all my growing up years i desired only one partner and decided to wait for her. she came, she saw, she conquered and dumped me ;)
now i am waiting for another lady with who i'll spend my life. i am not sure if she would appreciate my being celibate but if i expect my partner to be conservative it is fair that i also be the same.
There are temptations and they are forbidden (like married women hitting on you). if not for religious or moral issues, am withholding myself considering what is right or wrong for me.

Here are some reasons I know of:
Lack of sexual desire due to low hormone levels
Sexual abuse as a child
Religious beliefs
Fear of intimacy
Thinking that sex is "dirty" and should be avoided
Lack of desire to become parents

They may be tired of being hurt by the SO in their life, especially if they've had a series of disappointments.
