It's possible, but not probable. It could be 28 minutes from now or 280 years from now. When the superpowers square off against each other in two camps, then come back and we'll talk world war 3.

Until then, just think regional conflicts, wars between rump states, proxy wars and brinksmanship. If you recall the Yom Kippur War in 1973, a coalition of Arab States (Egypt, Syria and Jordan) were soundly defeated by the Israelis. That was a worse situation than the current conflict and it didn't raise a blip on the world war radar (not that it didn't have the potential to spark a global war).

The next World War will involve a nuclear exchange, how could it not. In the first 30 minutes, nearly a billion people will have been vaporised, mostly in the US, Russia, Europe, China and Japan. Another 1.5 billion will die shortly thereafter from radiation poisoning. The northern hemisphere will be plunged into prolonged agony and barbarity.

Eventually the nuclear winter will spread to the southern hemisphere and all plant life will die. You ask when is the apacolypse, you are asking when will we commit global suicide. My answer is it won't happen soon because the larger superpowers are more rational than the rump states in the middle east.

Our biggest risk is an accidental launch of nukes by one of the nuclear powers.

Yes and no. Given the proliferation of nuclear weaponry (and other advanced weaponry) today, WWIII will likely be a mass of small quick and local "skirmishes" designed to minimize the chance of pulling in the big powers. I think they call it terrorism--and as those the big Western powers are learning, when war changes, you either change with the flow or lose. And since terrrorism HAS changed the world, well, how does that not count as a 'world war'?? Frankly, all you have to do is turn on your TV. Shock and awe. Iraq, Iran, Iraq again. Afghanistan. Isreal. Lebanon. The former Yugoslavia. Chechnya. All shock-and-awe style wars there, And both the Trade Towers bombings too, if you want to get really technical about it.

In so many ways (only history will know for sure), we're already there, sorry to say.

I think it is possible but it would take a lot. I don't think it will happen anytime soon because everyone knows what has happened in the past. But once WWI and WWII are just a couple pages in a Global History textbook, people will forget what caused it and it might happen again. I know it's a horrible thought...but some people need to learn from history. It's all about education. We need to let people realize what could happen for all time so that it won't happen again.

Certainly. In fact we are in the beginnings of one now. A religious war.
If the radical Muslims get their hands on some nukes, it could be glass parking lot time. For if they use one, once it is tracked to the nation of origin.... well I need say no more.

I think that anyone who thinks that we are immune from WWIII is a fool. I also believe that we can prevent it but it will take constant vigilance and the concerted effort of a large number of people.
