a small boat, say 35-40 foot? Joshua Slocum sailed his 35 foot sloop Spray around the world alone in the 1890's; and many people sailed small boats long distances by themselves, either for work.offshore (fishing).or disaster....(lifeboats from sinking ships).......

now if you mean a hundred foot or bigger square rigged ship
( Master and Commander, Pirates of the Caribbean) No way. Hard to impossible to control the sails on a ship that big; all sails, indeed all work on those ships, was done by human muscle power, as in many people hauling on ropes...

Check out that link. Some people believe an Irish missionary during the early middle ages actually sailed from Ireland and came to America. Someone tested to see if it was possible and actually did it.

Sure, a small boat, designed for operation by one person..Lots of very small fishing boats made the coastal route from scotland/ireland to the coast of the "new world" for fishing and such, for a long time prior to columbus..if correctly navigated your never more than 200 nuat. miles from land the entire crossing...people have even crossed in an open row boat.its been done plenty in the more modern times, no reason it would have been any differnt 1000yrs ago.

Certainly. The only difficulty would have been navigation but even at that time in history that was pretty much handled.
