When you are committed to a person, when you are old enough to marry legally & afford without help from family to establish a good home with your sex partner to raise any child who might be born because of your sexual behavior.. Sex may be "fun" but parenthood is a 20 year committment!

I think it varies from person to person because people are different. I think only when the body, mind and soul have matured, should a person engage in sex. Some people never reach that point of maturity, however. Just because a person is physically able to have sex doesn't neccesarily mean they should. I think a person has to have it fully together (which not only includes the maturity of the mind, body and soul but also includes stability in their life) before they do the deed. I'm sure the world be a lot less screwed up if this were the case. Unfortunatley, too many stupid people have made this impossible. :)

You're going to hear "it depends on the person" a lot, and it does, it's just hard to know yourself even when you think you're ready. So I would say a few years after you really think you're ready. At 18 I would have said I was ready, but I'm glad I didn't listen to myself and waited, because I had tons of learning to do. I waiting until I was engaged (that didn't work out), but he was my first. I waited for the guy I knew would stand by me through any and all problems that arise is a sexual relationship. No one deserves anything less than that.

I think you answered your own question: when you can deal with the potential consequences.
Can you afford birth control? Could you afford (in time and money) to raise a baby? Can you think of being tied in responsibility to your potential partner for the next 21 years of a child's life? Could you visit a doctor to treat a STD without worrying about your parents finding out?

There is really no set age, although you really should be at least 17 in my opinion. When you are ready you will know it, just make sure the person you are with is someone you can trust and that you care about.

It would be best to wait for marriage. Starting having sex too young or before you are married is just asking for trouble.

When you are on your own paying bills in your house. Does not mean paying bills and living in your parents basement. A place were your name is on the lease.

I do not think there is a set age, but if you need to ask the question, then you are probably not ready.
