More of a coping tool. If I did not have a sense of humor, I believe I would go way beyond the brink of insane.

Absolutely. In my line of work if you don't have a sense of humor you won't last long, and when tension is at it's highest it is much better to laugh at yourself as well as others than to gripe at each other

Rarely.
Much of mine is introductory or conciliatory.
I'm prone to use humor to cover for my mistakes and can be self-deprecating when needed, just because of my inner self-confidence.
