I start college in Fall 2008. I know financial aid applications apen on Jan. 1 so should I apply for it and then lease an apartment or what? How do I use the financial aid money for the rent? I'm new to this so any help would be great!

The college I plan on enrolling in does NOT require freshmen to live on campus. Also, I really want to live off campus.. I just need advice as to how I can find money for that. Like is it considered student housing. Thanks everyone!

most college require freshman to live on campus that first year, you should check with your college before you make plans.

Peachy is correct that many, if not most, colleges require freshmen to live on campus if they aren't living at home with their parents. There are exceptions for students over the age of 25, however, and at state universities which tend to have an average freshman age of over 25, you may be able to live off campus. Definitely apply for the aid when the applications are due. You will probably have to lease an apartment on your own money, since you won't get the financial aid until classes start, but the money is usually give to you as a check (with the tuition already removed) so that you can spend it on whatever you need.

Live on campus for the first year, to get to know the town that the college is in so you know which apartments are good and bad and what areas of town are nice and not so nice. It is best to take your time and get a good deal than be stuck in an apartment that is crappy in a part of town that is bad and with a landlord that is a criminal.

Also this will give you time to meet people and find a good roommate to split the costs of an apartment.

Do the financial aid but take out only as much as you need and no more. Don't go into massive debt while in college. Calculate your budget for living off campus, make sure you cover things like rent, utilities like water, electricity, cable, telephone, rental insurance. Be sure to read the rental contract before you sign it and ask a ton of questions. Landlords in college towns like to scam students out of money because they know they can get away with it most of the time.

Apply for financial aid and then rent an apartment or something. I don't think you can use financial aid to pay the rent - financial aid can only be used on the college tuition.

ask a counselor. you may be out of luck here anyway; your college may require that you live on campus.

also ask your financial aid rep. do they cover rent, or just books and tuition?

The financial aid officers at your school will help you with ALL of that. No worries, that's their job, they'll hook you up!
