Happens to me a lot at PTA meetings at my kids schools and Jury Duty.

Not really. I don't count Jury Duty as volunteer because its required by law. You can't be lawfully committed to "volunteer" :)
I also don't mind jury duty but that's another question...

Yes, I've had volunteer duty sporadically throughout my 12 year Army career. I learned not to stand in one spot with nothing to do for too long. Eventually they'll 'find' something for you to do!
