This is his final year of eligibility (before going to the veteran's committee). In a 19-season career spent entirely with Cincinnati from 1970-88, Concepcion owned a .267 average, 101 home runs and 950 RBIs. The nine-time All Star is one of only 14 players in history to play more than 2,000 games at shortstop and collect more than 2,000 hits. Should he be voted in?

He won't make it in - he's never gotten more than 17% of the vote, and you need 75%. I don't see him suddenly quintupling his vote count in his last year of eligibility.

As for whether he deserved to be there - I'd have to say no. While he was good defensively, he wouldn't be considered one of the all-time greats and his offense was below average for the era. Simply put, though he had an above average career, I don't see him as achieving the greatness that the Hall should require.

Although Davey Concepcion was one of the great Latino players of his era, he just doesn't measure up to the other SS in the Hall of Fame. His .267 average is just that--average. He was a very good fielder, but not great or spectacular. his HR and RBI total are far less than many SS that are not in the Hall either, and 2,000 hits are nothing to brag about over 2,000 games and 19 years. Yes, Davey was good....but not great and therefore unworthy of the HOF!

That one is tough, a good player on some great teams. His numbers are right in line with two HOFers Aparicio and Ozzie Smith. With Smith being remembered as the wizard because of his defense his career fielding percentage stands at .978, Concepcion's percentage is .972, good but not great. He won't make it his final year but should get some support years down the road from the veterans committee. If Ozzie is in Omar Vizquel should be a shoe in, better offensive numbers and a career fielding percentage as of this year that is .006 better than Smith's at .984.

I would so much like to see Dave Concepción voted into the HOF! He was arguably one of the best shortstops in baseball during the 1970s :-). As you said nine-time All Star. But, his offensive play wasn't as good as his defensive plays. I don't think he will be voted in, because he hasn't had the support. He hasn't been voted in the last 14 times, just don't see it happening next time.
I would vote for him if I could!!

He should, but most likely won't. However, he'll have a ton of support on the Veterans Committee and waltz in come 2009!

No. Conception is a Hall of the Very Good-er, not a Hall of Famer.

Concepcion was a solid player but not HOF material.

I honestly don't think he will be, but he really deserves to be in, he was a great shortstop for the Reds!
