There is no definite answer to this question. It depends on the kind of tree, how long it has been since the tree was chopped down, how much you water it, and how many lights are used on the tree. Most trees will start to brown and should be taken down after 1.5-3 weeks. If a tree is still healthy looking it can stay up as long as you want. It should be noted that Christmas trees are big sources of allergens and mold. The longer they stay up the more particles they will release into the air.

A fellow Christmas tree grower once showed me a picture of a living room, where there was a Christmas tree standing that had been there for nearly 20 years! It was one of the funniest things I'd seen, ornaments hanging on a brown, dried-up tree. Wouldn't recommend that, of course...

You can leave your tree up as long as it is feeling fresh to the touch. If you grasp the branch and gently tug, the needles should feel moist and should (mostly) stay on the tree. It should also still be taking up water daily. Many of my customers who cut their trees Thanksgiving weekend will leave their trees up until New Year's Day.

You can keep it forever, but it won't have any needles left on it! They call them a Charlie Brown tree!
