That last word has usually been spoken many times over, but in some relationships the other party just can't seem to hear it. It's been my experience that the only one who thinks nothing was said is the party who refused to listen.

It's real ugly and immature behavior but when I was a younger lass, I must admit to at least a dozen. Fear of commitment, even friendships. Maybe I should have been a guy? Ouch! That's a little sexist, sorry. Some of my friends who have known me forever used to call me the "disappearing woman"..............ugh, how immature.
I have actually looked a few of those people up and apologized, years late of course.
