The best value is to buy a late model used bike with low miles.
Here is the rule: The good bikes are the bikes that are hard to find and buy used
The bad bikes that everybody hates are everywhere for sale used.
Most people buy a small, underpowered bike as their first bike, they quickly get tired of it and they either sell it of trade it in on a bigger bike, don't make that mistake.
Always buy a mid size bike or bigger, if you want a cruiser get one 750cc , 800cc or bigger, a sport bike 600, 650cc or bigger, anything smaller you will quickly grow tired of it cause its underpowered for ur needs.
I always suggest a mid size naked bike such as the Suzuki SV650, or Yamaha FZ6, cause these are a "do everything bike", these bikes will perform to any need you want, plus are comfortable and easy to ride and control on long trips.
The used dealers around here have a 03 Suzuki SV650 for $2199, and has plenty of Kawasaki and Suzuki 650cc dual sport bikes dirt cheap around the $2K price range. Find a 04 or 05 Yamaha FZ6 for around $3500 GREAT BIKE, I know cause I own one!

Street bike or Sport Bike?
Motorcycles are not like cars, for the most part. You will pretty much pay MSRP for all bikes, unless you are buying a new model left over from a previous year.

Honda's, Suzuki's, and Kawasaki's are all good, affordable bikes, but 'affordable' is a relative term.
Of course if you are hard-core and have the income, get a Harley.

I restored an 1983 Honda shadow 750 V-twin. I rode to Colorado from California last summer. I love that bike, but at my wife's insistence bought something that was quite a bit more shiny,A 2006 Kawasaki 900 Vulcan. I haven't ridden the Vulcan much yet and the jury is still out on which bike I will keep. The old Honda definitely has better performance ,fuel economy, and higher crusing speed.

I agree with Tom B. I had the same problem many years ago, started out with a 360, found it was too small and within 6 months bought a 750. I'd steer clear of the Chinese or Korean upstarts and stick with the established Jap, American or European makes.

As a rule, Jap engines are all good engines and very few Jap bikes are sold or traded in because the engine is worn out. Try to stick with something less than 10 years old because I've heard of some shops refusing to work on older machines. The exception is bikes with long model lives, like the smaller Suzuki Intruder, Honda Gold Wing, Kawasaki Voyager dresser, Concours sport-tour bike or any Harleys. Any time you have a bike that is produced for 15-20 years, you know it has to be dependable and dealers are going to work on it.
