That's stereotypical, though. What you call "emo" music may be uplifting to some people. Just because it's alternative or darker than most doesn't mean it brings you down. It all depends on personal preference.
Besides, sometimes music that is about being depressed or something like it has meaning, especially to the person who writes the song. There are a lot of songs that are darker that were written when the songwriter was going through a difficult period in life, and it showed in their music.

I actually enjoy emo music. I'd rather listen to emo than rap songs with women demeaning lyrics or pop songs that are so predictable I want to pull my hair out. Emo=emotional, and I've noticed the lyrics tend to be a lot deeper. As a poet, I prefer real lyrics that aren't predictable and that I can relate to. I listen to lots of different genres and happy music as well, so it's not like you have to just pick one kind and stick with that. Emo music may not be the most uplifting, but that doesn't mean it's "bad" or "wussy".
Oh and emo is a division of punk rock, so I'm sure a lot of you have been listening to emo music for awhile now without really realizing it. I really hate how emo has become a label these days...

Perhaps people just listen to it because they are interested in what these people have to say? Not everyone that listens to "emo" music is necessarily "emo." Besides all music is made from passionate artists and if you look it up passion also means suffering.

I have a question for you: what is defined as emo this week? I can't keep track of you stupid kids and whatever you decide is emo. It's emotional metal, a form of screamo. No, wait, now it's Dashboard Confessional, Weezer, and Jimmy Eat World. No, it's MCR and any other poseur band I hate. How about all the window licking teenagers of the world put down their cell phones, stop spending their parents' money, and get together and figure it out.
While you're there, serve bleach punch and die.

What's wrong with liking emo AND upbeat music? There IS such a thing as liking more than one kind of music.

Sigh, this post makes me feel sad (I guess that's Emo now too)
Emo is not about being depressed, it is a subgerne from Hardcore Punk with emotional lyrics.
Why cant you kids get that?

I like happy music. When I listen to sad music, it's real music. It's called the blues kids.
Long live Janis, Jim and Jimi...even though they're dead :(
Peace.

because
1. they are young kids, and most of them follow the trend
2. if there will another goth rock or whatever trend die hard fans will follow it.
because some of them make mistake by labeling things that actuaklly aren't what they are
its very hard today for young kids not to follow because of peer pressure @schools.
