Give them something worth working for, No-one is going to work long hours, and still not be able to feed their family.
If we don't want to see more crime, and drug abuse which affect us all, then we have to invest in the poorest neighbourhoods.
If there are no jobs then the people cannot work.

I am a full time college student, I am over 50, I support two kids, I have worked with disabilities for over 30 years, it's all new to me to ask for help because my kids need it. And I need it. It is not easy! I can't even get a job pushing a broom without a degree, so what would you do? Those who have a choice must do the best they can and if you think it was easy for me to ask for assistance: it was not. It is true from my experience that some have the system down pretty well and get by fine. Being in the "richest country in the world" you would think we wouldn't need human services - but we give it freely to other countries!

It's not that. Some people will need welfare in their lifetime, but only for a little bit. The problem is those who become complacent and drain the system. First of all, that's almost like passive stealing. Secondly, they make the honest ones look bad.
A solution? Cut them off after a certain amount of time passes, or if they don't look for a job or education. But I think they do it anyways.
It's the question of how to remove the parasite without harming the host.

Well, the best way to get people off it is to get rid of it completely. With all these social programs the government has created, the people have gotten rid of their confidence to build and take care of their own life.
Also self responsibility. I think a lot of people would be well off if it wasn't for their poor decisions. For example if you're 23 with two kids and a stay at home mother and you are indeed working at Burger King then you already made a bad mistake. Bring back common sense, which I have no idea how to do.
Basically try to have a nation that doesn't have much government involvement at all!

Job Training is essential but the quickest and most effective involves the Earned Income Tax Credit. Born during the Reagan years, and increased substantially by Clinton, it rewards low paid WORKERS, particularly those with familes to support, with extra income via the income tax system. Any cost out of tax dollars are more than offset by the reduced welfare costs.

Abolish and then rework the system to get it back to the original idea it was founded on, of a hand up not a hand out...the Liberals have made it an entitlement system that makes it hard for the recipient to get off...they make more money on Welfare than if they get a job at minimum wage.
Welfare was started by FDR not to be a long term program for the recipient but, to last just long enough to get the person on their feet..Also, it was never envisioned by FDR that it would change to the point that more kids you have the more money you get making the person dependent on the government.

Provide free job training give options, if diasabled, make it easy for them (work from home), etc.
Make it a pay-back system..in that they help someone else down the road (Community service)
Let people get to know their neighbors for help. (2 single moms) switch baby sitting services to help each other.
Give an incentive to kids to not get pregnant, education, a car, saving account, it will save money in long run and less starving kids.
Build more community gardens..for people who need a hand out refer them to the nearest community garden to contribute time in exchange for healthy food for their kids. (will reduce disease/illness/create healthier kids too) kids must work in garden also. Pulling/weeding/watering/planting, they will learn what our ancestors did.
Ones on cigarettes or addicted (yes we might have to drug test) get free help and no money towards their habits.

"Being realistic, what motivation does a person have to go to work at Burger King?" There is your answer - THEY ARE LAZY!!!! Cut off government welfare completely. COLD TURKEY! Let faith based charities and in most cases a swift kick in the rear end (realization that they won't get a free ride anymore) motivate them to get out and make some money so they can eat Burger King food.
Why don't you people that think like the person that asked this question go around and give out some more of your money to these able bodied individuals that think it is beneath them to work at Burger King?

Have them move out of the Red States. That would resolve 75% of all welfare in the country.
