How do you make a vocal stand out more in a song?

My husband has recorded a song in the basement and you can't hear the vocals it was all recorded at the same time how can he do this where the voice will stand out.

Get it done professionally and record the tracks seperately. Or, he needs to play alot softer and mic the vocals more. It will be a better, but still not great recording.
