Not sure about its origin, but LOL was found in publications as early as 1560.
It was first coined on a BBS (Bulletin Board System) called Viewline in Calgary, Alberta, Canada, sometime in the early-to-mid-80s. Somebody who went by the name of Sprout had said something so funny in the teleconference room that one of his friends found himself laughing out loud, literally 'echoing off the walls of their kitchen'. That's when "LOL" was first used ... at least, as far as publicly.
The use of LOL spread quickly around Viewline, but it wasn't until a bunch of people got free GEnie accounts that it really became popular. 'Rolling On Floor Laughing' (ROFL) was 'borne' by the GEnie people.
Today, the use of LOL (through the evolution of words and language) has become - in some people's opinions - so tainted that it's lost sight of the origin.
It might've come from the onomatopoeia 'lollen', which originally meant 'to snooze'. But today - at least online - it can mean 'laugh out loud', 'lots of love', or 'lots of laughs'.

I've been on the internet since the pre-WWW bulletin board days, this was early '90s, and people were using it then. People on the internet have been using and overusing it since at least that time, probably much earlier.
