Most of my weight was lost quickly by breastfeeding, so you're going to have to work harder than a mother who has that advantage.
Its a simple matter of living a healthy lifestyle. Avoid "diets", because as soon as you stop eating that way, the weight will come back. Just make better eating choices, and start exercising regularly. A 40lb weight loss is a pretty big goal. I weighed 118 lbs pre-pregnancy, and went up to 160 while pregnant. I got down to 120 while nursing, but gained about 10 back after weaning her. I would start by setting smaller goals, and working towards those.
Some small steps that will make a big difference:
Drink only water or water-type beverages like Propel. NO sodas. Even fruit juices have high sugar content and arent good if you want to lose weight. Add a drop of lemon to all the water you drink, and you wont retain it.
Drink 24oz of milk per day. Have an 8oz glass before every meal. This will help you fill up on less food. If you get the desire to snack, have a little glass of milk first, then wait a few minutes and see if you are still hungry.
Eat more protein (use google to find various sources of protein. its more than just meat) Protein will help you stay fuller longer.
Eat slower. This will also help you fill up on less food.
Keep fruit handy for when you crave sweet things.
If you're the type of person who snacks just because you are bored, try something like sunflower seeds that will keep your mouth busy without actually putting a lot in your body.
Find ways to sneak in extra exercise. For example, park at the far end of a parking lot so you have to walk farther. Wear your baby in a carrier while you clean house, etc.

I lost 16 of the 36 I gained in the hospital (baby, placenta, etc...) The other 20 I lost over the next 2 months by walking everyday, nursing, and watching what I ate. It was really just making sure the snacks in between meals were healthy, and drinking a lot of water, since it has no calories. I was back in my size 2's by the time my daughter was 3 months.

my weight didn't budge until i changed my diet. l lost 20 pounds in 3.5 months with a combination of the south beach diet and an exercise routine that combined two days of weights with three of cardio, switching every other day. it was tough, but the results kept me going and i am starting this pregnancy at 15 pounds below my previous pre-pregnancy weight. best of luck!
