Will my internal lightscribe burner lose any functionality if I place it in an external enclosure?

I dont see why it would, but I want to be 100% sure before I place an order for one.

but if you move it to another computer you will have to run the install CD on the other computer to get all the functionality

No. The burner is completely enclosed anyway. You may lose bandwidth, however.
