Fischer now lives in Iceland, and is now very anti-America even though he's the only US-born chessplayer to become the official World Chess Champion. He disappeared for a long while around 1975 but now is living in exile.

What happened to him is he went nuts.
His entire life was consumed with chess, he had no life outside of chess.
He lacks any social skills or the ability to interact with normal people outside the chess community.

Bobby Fischers mother was Jewish, his father was a Christian. Under the laws of Judaism he is Jewish due to his mother being Jewish.

He's become a bitter, anti-American, anti-Semite stateless person who has asylum in Iceland.

FWIW he did not give up chess. His membership was revoked and is no longer sanctioned to play.
