my new betta fish died and before i found it dead it had a tendancy to not move or sink to the ground. He would not eat today and the water temp was consistant at 73 F. I only have a Betta bowl and a Betta light. I fed him a few Frozed red grubs yesterday.

The water temperature was a little on the low side for bettas, but a healthy betta wouldn't have died in 24 hrs just from water that was 73o instead of 76o.

It may have already been sick when you bought it (I've bought them and found out once I got them home they had internal parasites).

When you put it in it's container, did you add the water from it's original container so it didn't have an immediate temperature change? If you just put water from the tap in the bowl, then added the fish, there may have been an even larger temperature difference. And did you add a conditioner to remove the chlorine/chloramine (depending on which is added to the water in your area)? http://www.thetropicaltank.co.uk/chlor.htm

ADDITION: And did you measure the water temperature with the light on or off? If you turned the light off, did the water get too cold overnight?

Bettas should be in a tank of preferably 2.5 gallons or more so they can have a heater.

Tap water is generally fine to use, as long as you add conditioner to remove the chlorine/chloramine.

Well, most Betas aren't cared for properly in pet stores. They die because their whole lives they are in cold tiny plastic bowls that are hardly ever changed. Then they are put through the stress of moving from the pet store to your home and that's about all they can take. They die from stress. A healthy specimen would be able to handle a move. Try going to a local fish store, not a large pet supply place. And try to get some fish from them. Before buying one try to get one that is vibrant and alert. Look at the fins. Don't get one that looks like it has torn fins or red/purplish gills. Hope this helps! Good luck with the next one!

bettas eat lil pellets, & they are labyrinth fish, which means additionally they get air from going as much as the floor of the water & getting a gulp of air, so they dont even desire a stay plant, we had 2 bettas & had a faux plant in each physique's tank & a small volume of pebbles on the backside to particularly it up. merely take out a million/2 the water each few days or as quickly as each week (reckoning on how plenty they poo) & fill up with clean water, & upload some drops of a water conditioner, u dont could desire to do the rest, they are particularly easy to maintain. stable success with it! :-)

You are not supposed to feed it frozen red grubs it need betta food and the water was probably dirty or someone owned the betta before you and didnt take good care of it

Well it depends what kind of water you used...for one they are supposed to be in gallon or bottled water,no tap water and feed him betta food only...i had one for three years...you will probably need to change their water like every week or week and a half!!
