You can store data on Compact Discs, Digital Versatile Disc, Hard Disk Drive, Solid State Disk, CompactFlash Card, Zip drive, cassette, USB key, External (USB) Hard Drive, Floppy Disk Drive and many other forms of media.

The most important difference between the techniques is the difference between complete and incremental. An incremental backup is a backup of all data that has been modified since the last backup and a complete backup is just that. A new complete copy of the entire data source.

The advantages and disadvantages are extensive so choice of backup tends to fall down to the context (how critical is the data, is some data more critical than other data?) and price (how much does it cost to store and maintain sufficient media to ensure reliable backup?)

For personal backups an external Hard drives are the best solution in my opinion.
