I come from a very wealthy family and am accostumed to receiving lavish gifts for special occasions. My fiance's family is also well-off, and they know the lifestyle that I am used to. This year for Christmas, his family only gave a bag that retails for a little over $700(Louis Vuitton Antigua Cabas MM.) My family and I, however, spent over $3,000 on his family. I feel cheated. Should I ask my fiance to buy me more gifts to make up for his family's lack of consideration, or just spend less on them next year?

I feel for you, you have money and are generous, they on the other hand, and wealthy and stingy.... yes be mad. Spend less next year, and ask for more presents from your boyfriend.

You might want to reconsider the situation. By being brought up a certain way you have learnt that material goods equal love. So believing this, you are looking at what you recieve as a measurement for how they feel about you. In fact, this is a faulty perception of love and acceptance.
In fact, if you consider their traditions, and what they value and perceive as love and acceptance, you will probably see the incredible gifts you recieved at Christmas. When you merge families, it is important to be flexible and open to what other do and why. This is a great way to be your best person, to really become the highest of your potential, and learn from this experience what you are, and what you want to adopt into your life with this man. Alternately, you can gently teach these people some values of your own.
Always remember that material things are never a measurement of love and acceptance, they are not measurable because they either exist, or they exist elsewhere.

wow..what are you, the next paris hilton wannabe? you look like in your twenty with a mind of a 2 year old. you are greedy. Let me guess, you give him 3k just to show him that you're rich, not in a way that you love him. wow...thats sad. Gift are gift, how can he suppose to know you're giving that much on him? you should just be happy for what you have. maybe hes not wealthy as you but i'm sure that 3000 is not all from you because you say your family in it. You will always feel unhappy if you're continue to be like this. Even a 5 year old arent spoil as you. By the way your fiance deserve someone better if you dont change that habit ...

I too come from a family with such a back ground. However, I find that I unlike most care little about money although I have it. I am more impressed with the thought of the gift if anything. To sum this up, I would say NO, you should not be mad and should be lucky that you have someone who even thought of you. If you need "lavish" gifts to make yourself feel good or better or accepted then I suggest giving one to an unexpected person.

First of all 'accustomed' but anyway. You trying to bye everything for money. Big mistake here. Judging by your speech everything in your family is concentrated on money. You probably know already (or planned) how much to spend next year on Xmas. Well, you rich (well-off) guys need to slow down with that notion that 'My money is my fortress' 'cause you never know what's gonna be next. You've got to be accustomed to spend both 3000 or 300 or even 30 bucks. That's no big deal. Believe me you cannot by love, attitude, friendship for money. Sometimes it takes a smile, heartfelt words, 'symbolic' presents for holidays BUT most of all Attention. You can buy him presents that cost 100 000 bucks and when he'll give you a present say worth 50 000 you still will feel mad. Don't get me wrong here I'm not trying to discourage you it's just very mercantile to think about the worth of presents. That's not a business, is it. And besides do you think it's good to entertain yourself with thoughts like how much is this bijou (everytime you get it or something else). Well, it's up to you to decide. Think about someone who ain't go nuthun for Xmas and New Year. Do you feel the difference??? You can of course reply that i'm not guilty that i come from a very rich family, yes i agree, but still think about not only money.

A gift is just that and any you receive is an act of kindness and shows that someone thought of you. Im sorry you equate money value with items but it sounds like you get that honest. Go take a trip to visit the troops in Iraq and take them 3000 worth of gifts then go to Washington National Cemetery and look at all the headstones of all that have died to support this country then maybe you can see what value really means in this world.

I know...take the money your fiance gives you and buy an attitude adjustment. Lady, get real! You cannot turn on the news or web or TV w/out hearing about world hunger and poverty? You're the one who is inconsiderate. The true meaning of Christmas is to be w/family and just be thankful you have them. But then again, I wouldn't expect you to understand that since family doesn't come w/a price tag...

Perhaps your fiance's family is not as wealthy as yours girl! I feel that you shouldn't be mad at all. Unless you feel that there was a deliberate attempt by your fiance and/or his family to make you and/or your family uncomfortable (family politics). If you think your fiance can buy you more gifts, go ahead! It does seem strange that you're concerned about these issues and not the fact that it is a season of giving and you should really know your fiance better! That's what I think. GPM

Do you consider the cost when you gift? That is too bad.
You are materialistic, spoilled person.
I spend lot of money on my wife's birthday and she hardly ever spend money but she makes things with her hand. I feel her gifts are more expensive in terms of love than mine.
Spending $700 for things you need is much much better than spending $3000 on things I don't need.
Buying things for a bargian and spending $700 is much better than spending $3000 for same item.
How about not giving any gift and just giving love and affection next year.

is this a real question?
you are one totally shallow person.
why can't you just be happy with what they gave you and not count the cost.
your fiance must know you by now as he has asked you to marry him, and if he did not buy you more gifts to make up for what his family didn't give you, then forget about it. On second thought, sure, go ahead and ask him for more. He might find out something about you that he didn't know before.
If you are so wealthy, then go out and buy yourself something.
good luck
