Hi I have a Window98(with a DVD ROM installed with ultra speed) yeah I'm getting a new one and I'm going to be trading it in with a man who fix computers and build them. I'm going to get the newest and THAT'S why I wanted to know with a Window98 having a performace status of
Memory:384.0MB of RAM
system Resources: 38%
File system:32-bit
Virtual memory:32-bit
Is Good or half decent so that when I get my new one it will save a couple of bucks when I do the trading!
My computer seems to be working ok but I would like to be updated to the new versions!

10 points automactically for anyone who gives me a true good answer!

The only thing you mentioned is how much memory your system has. How about Hard drive, CPU, video card, soundcard. Now, if you are were going to keep this system, you would be better off byung a new Tower from a place like Dell.com as they are fairly cheap. I have seen them for as little as 300.00 for just the tower with the OS already installed.

Sorry I could not say if your system is good or decent since you only provided the specs of your memory.

Cheers!

You want an honest answer and here goes my opinion.

The data you provide do not tell me much about the system itself, what video card/modem/hard drive capacity and type, does it have USB upgrades, are the main components integrated into the motherboard or on a ISA/PCI slot? In short, you do not provide enough to make a good judgment of the value if any of this machine.

A system that was running on Win98 when new is past its best days. It does not matter that it still runs good there is no real market for it except to trick folks into a trade-in. What they do they tell you they are giving you $50-$100, which they already hiked on to the value of the machine they "Custom Built" for you.

I have been fixing computers for some years and the only reason I would need one of these machines would be to use it as a dumb terminal to teach kids how to use a computer or as a teaching laboratory unit.

The fact that you still keep it running tells me that you take good care of your machines. Spend your money wisely and buy a new system from a reputable vendor, or somebody who has a good report building custom machines. If you have kids that are not old enough to have a new machine in their hands this W98 machine would be great to put on a home network for them to do home work and surf the net.

Windows 98 is rather dated. If you're running it on a computer that was current when W98 was current, your computer is dated as well.

As a trade in, the computer and software aren't worth more than a couple hundred dollars at most - and that would require that someone could actually do something productive with it.

In any event, 384MB of RAM isn't much - folks are using upwards of 2GB these days. The other characteristics you've listed aren't important in this case.

I hate to say it, but you shouldn't expect more than about $50 US from a nice trader for a machine like that.
