I loved it. In fact, if there was a word stronger than "love", I'd use THAT word to describe my enjoyment.

It was visually stunning, emotionally captivating, musically wondrous, brilliantly directed (Tim Burton's masterpiece, in my opinion), and is one of Depp's finest performances to date.

It WAS really violent and bloody, but then again, he IS "the Demon Barber of Fleet Street" and it's quite expected for a throat to squirt blood when it's been slit. I love that it isn't your "average" bunch of twittering nonsense like most musicals. There were lots of dark, twisted, ironic, complex songs. Sondheim is a genius!

I enjoyed Depp's voice very much, though a lot of "seasoned" Broadway fans complained that he didn't have the kind of quality in his voice they're used to, but he did hold his own rather nicely for an untrained singer. Thankfully, ignorance is bliss, and being unaware of how "inferior" he is in comparison to Broadway crooners, I thought he did spectacularly well.

Helena was brilliant, naturally, and took the character to all new places that worked absolutely perfectly for the film. And of course she looked smashing doing it! Again, many were disappointed with her voice, and I admit that it was a bit flat and whispery, but that's certainly excusable given the fact that she played her part so well.

I can think of several favorite parts. For instance, the only moment in the whole show when Sweeney looks truly heartbroken, when he says (with his eyes practically swimming with tears) "Where is Lucy? Where is my wife?" and his brief, devastated expression after he's told that she poisoned herself. I don't think Johnny Depp could have done anything to make that moment any more poignant.

It felt like my whole body lit on fire when, FINALLY, in the end, Judge Turpin recognizes Sweeney for who he is and growls "Benjamin... Barker" and then Sweeney SCREAMS "BENJAMIN BARKER!!!" Wow.

Epiphany was SO well done. The weaving in and out of the crowd, the manic gesturing and insistence that every filthy throat deserves to spill rubies for his blades, his agony and then his deranged sense of purpose, and the INTENSITY! I loved it.

The "By the Sea" sequence was of course comedy GOLD. That bathing suit! His scowling demeanor! Absolutely perfect. The Sweeney/Pirelli shaving contest was handled superbly by Sacha. Can't think of anyone better for the role.

I think the most profound and poetic moment in the film was at the very end, that awful, bloody image of Sweeney cradling the wife he had slain, spilling his guilty blood all over her. Revenge truly does eat itself up in the end, and to see it's victims surrounded by a pool of red in the end was, well, probably one of THE most powerful images in cinematic history.

Haven't seen it but I can't wait. I took the kiddos to see Water Horse instead for now. Loved it, and it is sure to be a classic. As I belive that Sweeny Todd will be, if Edward Scissorhands is any indication.

Best of luck

I went to see it the day after Christmas, and all I can say is it surely was a good Tim Burton movie. I'm suprised at how well the singing was done. Both Johnny Depp, Helena Bohmen Carter, and Alan Rickman are phenomenal actors. The music was great as well. : )

I loved that movie. Everything about it was wonderful. Every scene was picturesque. The ending was so poetic. Even the blood was beautiful.

my son did and liked it. I know the story from the broadway musical and am not sure I would like the movie as well, since it was altered somewhat.
