Okay I have been trying forever to come up with a short story and now I have an idea for one and have no ideas for names! Help? I need one for the main character (girl,17), her best friend (guy,17) and her little brother (3-5)! I'd really appreciate you guy's help! Also can you tell me what the age of the little brother should be? :)

I use a site called Behind the Name to select names. There are thousands there. For surnames, I prefer to use the US Census Bureau list of names in the US beginning with the most common to the least.

when you're choosing a name i think you should look for names that go good with the characters personallity.
for example if your characters are just normal people than choose normal names such as for the main character "Hannah" and for the guy best friend "Ethan" and for the baby brother "jacob" but if your characters are exotic or different then their names should be rare names that not many people have like for the main chracter "Amaris" (which means child of the moon) and for the guy best friend "Basil" (its the name of a saint) and for the baby brother "Caleb" (its a A biblical name. In Hebrew it mens faithful. In Arabic it mens brave)

It's kind of hard to pick names if you don't know the story plot. Name the older characters names that you might give for your son or daughter. The little one, however, you just gotta come up with something.
Or you can always go buy a book of baby names.

older sister - Cornelia, Margaret(Maggie for short), Veronica, Hannah, Jane, Karen
Best friend guy - Caleb, Marcus, Vinny, Henry, Daniel, David

Might help to know a little about the character backgrounds and setting. For instances none of the above suggestions would work very well if your story took place in ancient China....
Knowing the time and place would help.
Just a thought... Of course it is your story so the rules are your own to make... or break.

The little brother should be 5 because it's the age where they are possibly the most annoying and can actually understand what your saying.
