The computer right now has a gigabyte 8I945P-G motherboard, and Intel Pentium D processor. What are some CPU that would be better than the current one and compatible with the motherboard?
Also, are there any other things that a changed CPU would require?

The motherboard:

That motherboard was made during the Pentium D (Smithfield and Presler) era. The BIOS revisions do not seem to indicate support for Core 2 Duo. The fastest you could put there would be the Pentium D 960 3.6gHz or the Pentium EE 965 3.73gHz. Just use the accompanying cooler or a better one if you will overclock.
BUT take note that the upgrade may not be as significant as when going to Core2 Duo. C2D, even at moderate gHz is fast because it does more work per clock cycle.

My old VAIO (which I recently sold because I couldn't upgrade CPU) had a P45 chip set. It can handle the Pentium D and maybe the some older processors. The only thing you can do, like the guy above me said, is to go for a higher clock frequency Pentium D.
