Hi, I went to my doctor today for a throat infection and he gave me the prescription antibiotic Amoxicillin. I am on birth control and had sex with my boyfriend yesterday morning and will start taking Amoxicillin tomorrow morning, my period ended on last Tuesday...is there a chance I could get pregnant or since im taking it two days after I had sex I should be fine? How long usually does the Amoxicillin effect birth control? I have 4 days of taking it. Thanks to all who respond :) and happy new year

I understand all that your all saying, but what I mean is, I had sex yesterday morning, two days later im taking Amoxicillin and not going to be having sex again for another 5-6 weeks. So, I'm just wondering if taking this antibiotic even 2 days after sex will possibly get me pregnant? I'm on ortho tricyclin lo btw

They say that antibiotics can lessen the effects of birth control. You weren't on the antibiotics when you had sex so you should be fine, but if you plan to have sex while you are on the antibiotics, I'd use another form of protection. Antibiotics such as Tetracycline and Doxycycline and Minocycline have a greater chance of reducing the effects of birth control than other antibiotics. I would call any pharamcy that is open in your area and just double check!

I was worried about this too since I had to take a dose of 1,000 mg before a dental appointment (I have a heart murmur).
The nurse at the doctor's clinic said being on antibiotics for short term shouldn't affect things (short term meaning 3 days). Call your doctor, or a Planned Parenthood clinic and ask about the length of your prescription and the fact you're on birth control. If it's for too long, they'll recommend still taking the pill but using a condom during this month.

This info should be on the leaflet in your birth control pills.
Antibiotics may decrease the effectiveness of birth control pills and it is noteworthy that birth control pills are not 100per cent effective anyway. it would have been best to have discussed with your doctor, additional contraceptive methods whilst taking your medication as metabolism and blood levels of birth control may alter their effectiveness.
It is always best practice to use a condom during the course of the antibiotics and for ?7days after the course. Though to be sure it would be best to phone and discuss with your GP, NHS Direct, family planning clinic or pharmacy to ascertain exactly your position.
Hope this helps, all the best and happy new year to you

You might be OK. But antibiotics do interfere with the Pill, so don't do this again.
