During the last few days I've listened to various media outlets talk about contracts, contracts, and contracts. All that talk not only made me hungry (it was around breakfast time, people), but got me wondering...which player in league history had the biggest dropoff in scoring following a huge contract haul?

McCabe.

No way to Mogilny Bob. He never played with a player like Lafountaine again until he was paired with Sundin but by then his body was battered. In fact I'd hazard to say he was the best Russian player to ever play in the NHL. At least he showed up for the playoffs.

Good question but one that probably nobody has an answer to because I don't think it is something that anyone has kept track of (maybe Elias Sports Bureau or something).
Many Euro players have been known to pull it off. I think the ones people listed above are too early to tell, they could have amazing second halfs.
I know Prospal is notorious for 80 points in contract years and 50 in non-contract years. Not sure when Theodore started stinking, may have been after his big deal.
Not just limited to hockey either, baseball has TONS of guys who have their career seasons in contract years. (Brings to mind another guy too early to tell though-Jason Blake)

What is the old adage (fits your hunger moment as well) pertaining to contracts???

" A hungry player is always better than one just fed."

I'm going to go with Bobby Orr
2 yrs, $2.4MM
scores 23 points in those two years after 135pt season two years earlier!

Bob
Mogilny was New Jersey's leading scorer when he was sent down. That was more politics than anything else so I hardly consider it a drop-off. He was averaging 11 minutes a game at the NHL level, and averaging 9 minutes a game because Lou Lamoriello felt that the 'medical' documents he received were falsified, else he never would have resigned Mogilny

Brad Richards signed a 5 year, 39 million dollar deal in the 2006 offseason. Since then, he recorded just 70 points last season, and is a horrific minus-21 this season.

Why? Look at his line-mates. Jan Hlavac? Michell Oullett? Mathieu Darche? Those guys couldn't finish a play if they were given the puck squarely on the tape.

Tough question! How about in the same season? Hasek resigned with Detroit for, geez, I think $5 mil after he came out of retirement (and some legal troubles in Czech). He was injured right away and Detroit had a nightmare dealing with Hasek, Cujo and Legace. They bought out Hasek's contract, Cujo sucked lemons and even did a stint on the farm team, and Legace stepped up to the plate, but bowed under pressure. I can't cite stats without looking them up, but it sure was a cluster for Detroit.

Gotta say David Legwand and heres why...

6 year, 27 mil contract 2 weeks ago....

Since---- 1 assist and last night, rumor has it he left the game with a broken arm... The last cant be anticipated, but this just screams Enron economics to me...

Correct me if I am wrong. Didnt Brett Hull sign a contract before the lockout, then played 5 games after it and retired? Thus, 4.5 MIL, no points!

Gomez and Drury have not done much. I thought the Rangers were going to be the team to watch this year .... not even close. When they picked them both up through free agency ... I think the entire league went ... OH OH.
