You have good answers above, but a comment to:
Enzyme3 : My Friend Shah was in power for About 30 years, perhaps you are too young to know that? And Iran's first hostility to the completion of Revolution took no more than 2 years. So for almost 27-28 years Iran was called Island of stability in ME, by US Pres. And US got the full treatment for all those years, making Zillions of Iranian resources?
It worked very well for US.
Best Regards.

The Shah of Iran was king of Iran from 1941-1979. The Shah was actually installed by the government of Britain.
The United States CIA attempted to overthrow the Shah in 1953. The CIA operation was originally conceived of during the Truman administration and carried out in the first few months of the Eisenhower administration.
The Shah's primary crimes appear to be his suppression of Islamic militancy in Iran which resulted in his eventual overthrow and the institution of an Islamic Fundamentalist government.
The Nixon sponsored over throw of Salvador Allende was obviously a serious mistake on the part of the Nixon Administration.
Nixon, a liberal to moderate republican, found himself at odds with powerful Conservatives such as J. Edgar Hoover whom Nixon attempted to fire at least twice.
Nixon had promised to withdraw from Vietnam and Conservatives in the US were upset by this capitulation to Communist China. Once Nixon started talking to Red China and working out a trade agreement it became obvious that Nixon had to toss the anti-communist faction in the US (The Democrat led HUAC or House Un-American Activities Committee as well as the rabidly anti-communist J. Edgar) a bone and Salvador Allende became that bone.
Pinochet was anti-communist fascist scum. In spite of that two of J. Edgar Hoover's (the most rabid US anti-communist) FBI agents (including an assistant director) were involved in bringing that "Pinko" Nixon down. Interesting factoid.
Another interesting factoid is that after J. Edgar's death HUAC changed it's name and quit publishing a "commie blacklist".
The US Sponsored governments in Germany, Japan and South Korea as well as other nations have done exceptionally well.
You really need to quit reading US leftist propaganda. It colors your perception. Try European sources for US history. They are most enlightening.

How about the Brussels bureaucracy that formed the EU. first the European Steel Community, then The European Economic Community and then---finally, the European Union.
It is a waste of taxpayer money for the Europeans and it will be even worse in the long run.

They have all been successful in making the military industrial complex very rich.
They don't work out well for the USA as a nation or the countries involved... But, they work out great for the people who really control everything.
