I'm wondering if Alexander Ovechkin has either cut off in-season contract talks or are the Caps waiting until the offseason to talk. If someone signs him to an offer sheet, it will be the Jaromir Jagr situation all over again. Any thoughts to this?

Since we are on the subject of the Capitals, they sure look confident on the ice after the recent coaching change. Was I under the impression the team (especially the defensive corps) was playing like they were under suicide watch while being coached by Glen Hanlon? I've never seen a team play that scared since the 1997-98 Vancouver Canucks!

There are on going discussions with Ovechkin. Leonsis commented on them today (nothing real just another "we love him, and he'll be with the organization for a long long time"). Everyone's acting like if the caps don't resign Ovie now he's gone. the guy is a RFA so if they don't resign him before July 1 he'll get an amazing offer from another team the caps will match and it's game over.

The Capitals and Ovechkin have been talking a lot lately, I expect something to be done before July 1st.

The fact that Leonsis and McPhee have been so vocal about matching any offer that any other team makes, will probably cause other teams to shy away.

Hopefully Ovechkin and his team of advisors will realize that Leonsis means business and agree to what Washington has offered (9.1MM a year is what is going around the league).

On the other hand, maybe Ovechkin will realize that he should hire an agent and get it done faster and increase his endorsement revenue at the same time.

Good question. It is something they should get done sooner than later.
To those saying that it doesn't matter because he will match any offer.......wrong. It does matter because if he waits to match any offer, especially after declaring he will, a team will offer him the max and front load it. The Caps are much better off getting it done sooner than later as it will save them money.
If they are indeed waiting until the season is over, I would expect it to be their first order of business. Who knows, maybe their is something more to it, like Ovechkin has turned down their offers in an attempt to get out. We don't always get all the scoops on these things but theoretically, Ovechkin could force their hand by turning down their offers until he becomes a RFA, then even when the Caps match, he will get more money.

they are waiting till the off season and GMGM has already said hell match any offer, ovechkin will be a cap. Bruce is nothing like hanlon they are much better off now, he's 9-5-4 or somthing as their coach, i think he's the right 1 for the job and he can turn this season around. playoffs are NOT out of the question look how close it is right now.

this could nicely be one in each of those uncommon subject concerns that splits the two events down the midsection. Neither one needs to the touch it everywhere close to an election 3 hundred and sixty 5 days, and that i think of with stable reason - merely look into the bitter anger coming from the two aspects in this. In Washington, doing no longer something is often greater secure than doing something, and it is doubly genuine in even-numbered years. So i do no longer think of that's a foul pass for them. Heck - they could no longer settle on what to do besides - Bush agreed with the Democrats!

My guess would be the Caps not wanting to begin discussions with Ovie until the off-season.

I really don't see what the problem is. The Washington Capitals will match any offer given to Ovechkin; He is their franchise player.

Caps need to face facts. If there isn't a significant improvement in the club by the time Ovie's a UFA, he's gone. They would be better off to let him sign elsewhere and take all those picks than waste money on him when we all know (well maybe not Cap fans) that he's going to bolt once the chance is there. They will always be doormats.

They need to resign Ovechkin as soon as they can. They don't need a distracted player - especially one as important as him - going into the end of the season and the playoffs thinking about contract negotiations.

Dont worry, he isnt going anywhere anytime soon. And even if someone signs him to an offer sheet, Washington will match it, they dont have anybody else they need to save money for anyway.

Ovie's agent is his father and they are negotiating slowly. Semin's contract is a starting point. They will get it done. Ovie is restricted so the Caps can match any offer. By the way, the number of the truck that hit Ottawa the other night was 8!!!!
