I want to move to Los Angeles, but I don't plan on visiting before I do. I've been doing a lot of looking on-line for a place to stay, but every place I contact tells me that I'll need to be there in person to sign the application and all that. Is there anyway for me to get an apartment without having to physically be in Los Angeles?

You could go there and live in a motel for a few days until you find an apartment. Or you could go there now and find an apartment, and do the paperwork now, with the lease starting when you are ready.

I do not recommend getting a place by phone. Go to LA and rent one of those places you pay by the week and then go look for a place. I made the mistake of doing a move from 1000 miles away to a place site unseen. The rent was 900 for a 2bdrm and the women told me that the place had just been painted and a new "chandalier" had been put in and it really sounded like this was a nice little trendy place by the way she described it. So as soon as I pulled up to the place there was like 5 black guys sitting right on the stairs to this place. (Im white in case you couldnt tell) Anyway, turns out the whole neighboorhood was a black area and i wouldve been the only white person there, not to mention it turned out to be a drug area. I was already there though and decided that maybe the inside of the place wasnt so bad even though the outside was a dump. The inside seriously looked like an old crack house. Needless to say, i didnt stay. Took me over 3 more weeks to find a place and it was very stressful, but i ended up in a really good area for a little less money, but it was much smaller. You really need to check out the area in LA because you dont know how some of those neighboorhoods can be.

Not a smart thing to do. My daughter lived in NY and was moving to NC. They found the house, looked at pictures on the web site, mailed a deposit and put everything they owned on a truck and drove down there without actually seeing the house first. They had to sign a lease before they were allowed to move anything in. Once in problems with leaks, doors that wouldn't close, etc started the first week.

Not usually, at least, not that I've ever heard of. Real estate (including renting) is a very finicky practice that requires in person presence. You have to see the apartment, otherwise its too easy for you to sue them.

IE, you go to the apartment and notice a huge crack in the wall, but you don't ask them to fix it and decide to live with it, and sign the lease. Thats your decision.
If you moved in, signed a lease that the apartment was clear of defects, and then saw a huge crack, then we have legal problem.

Most states (I dont know about California specifically, btw) require with any residential lease that you tour the premises and go over the rental lease in person.

That isn't such a smart thing to do. People could tell you anything, give you pictures of who knows where and you'd believe them without seeing the place? Not too smart. Especially in LA! I suggest you make the effort to see the place you plan to live before you sign anything!
