These were the Sumerians, and around 3000 BC they began to form large city-states in southern Mesopotamia that controlled areas of several hundred square miles. The names of these cities speak from a distant and foggy past: Ur, Lagash, Eridu

Sumerian writing was pictographic writing. The Sumerians would scrawl their picture words using reeds as a writing instrument on wet clay which would then dry into stone-hard tablets

Sumerian architecture is probably the oldest serious architecture (not just building houses and barns) in the world. People living in the area between the Tigris and the Euphrates rivers (modern Iraq) began to build really big, substantial buildings about 3500 BC. Because there's practically no building stone in this area, but there's lots of clay, Sumerian architects built their buildings out of mud-brick or fired brick.

Sumerian is the first known written language. Its script, called cuneiform, meaning "wedge-shaped". The Cuneiform script is one of the earliest known forms of written expression. Created by the Sumerians in the late 4th millennium BC, cuneiform writing began as a system of pictographs. Over time, the pictorial representations became simplified and more abstract.

Ok, here's a hint that should be worth the ten points, but you probably aren't going to like it:

The answers to your question aren't necessarily the same, depending upon who you talk to. If you want to pass your test, you had better review what your teacher told you. I could give you my answers, but if they don't match what you were given to read or told in class, my answers will get you an F.

Please don't rob yourself of the learning experience your teacher is trying to give you. There is no short cut. You must do the assignment. Getting help from Yahoo answers only makes you dumber.
