The real answer is 8,192 megabits = 1 gigabyte

The other answers of 1,000 is wrong
The others are answering "How many megaBYTES = 1 gigaBYTE.
And even then the answer is NOT 1.000.
1,024 megabytes = 1 gigabyte

a byte is eight bits
the prefix mega- means a million but in computers we actually are talking about 2^20=1,048,576
the prefix giga- means a billion but in computers we actually are talking about 2^30=1,073,741,824
so a gigabyte is 8*2^10 megabits which is 2^13=8192 megabits.
But usually you would compare gigabytes with megabytes, not megabits.

a bit and a byte are not the same thing. so it depends on what you mean whether you mean "megabits" or "megabytes".

1 byte=8 bits
1 megabyte would be 8 megabits
1 gigabyte=1000 megabytes.

so 1gigabyte = 1000*8 megabits =8000

although I think Encrypted is probably right saying that 1 gig is actually 1024 megs.
